The top band of paper looked powder-dry, yet Hector’s fingertip met a cool, slightly sticky surface as he slid the board into place. By custom he began with the sky, so he dipped a broad brush into a puddle of pale blue he had mixed earlier. His elbow brushed the white plastic palette; the tray nudged the rinse cup, and a ridge of cloudy water rolled out, striking the lower clips before spilling across the wet zone. Pigment bloomed like a spreading legend on the tilted sheet. Hector turned the board a fraction, hoping to persuade the loose wash to stay within the planned horizon, but fresh tendrils kept drifting downward.

A wide shadow swept over the porch; Glen, working at the other end of the table, raised one hand and murmured, "Look." A silent vulture glided overhead, its wings a black bracket against the silver sky. Both boys stepped onto the grass for a clearer view. During those few breaths, a faint breeze skimmed the porch, speeding the drying edge on the right side of Hector’s paper. When he returned, the advancing boundary had marched far below the halfway point, leaving a tide mark that would not blend. The uneven stripe now resembled layered stone a geologist might slice to study, darker at the base and pale toward the ridge.

Hector switched to a narrow brush and touched fresh water along the jagged line, then lifted the lower left corner to steer the flow away. The runoff gathered at one point and broke free, but a raised clip blocked further travel and the cascade eased. Accepting the new shape, he deepened the stripe with stronger colour, turning it into distant cliffs that echoed the soaring bird. Near the palette, the rinse cup kept rocking in tiny arcs, pale ripples sliding toward its rim.

ポーチの上を大きな影がよぎり、テーブルの端で制作中のグレンが片手を上げて「見て」とつぶやいた。無言のハゲワシが銀色の空を黒い括弧のように滑空していた。二人はよりよく見ようと芝生へ踏み出した。その数呼吸のあいだにかすかな風がポーチをかすめ、ヘクターの紙の右側で乾燥境界を早めた。戻ってみると、その線は半分よりかなり下まで進み、混ざらない潮痕を残していた。でこぼこした帯は地質学者が調べる断層のように見え、下ほど濃く上ほど淡かった。

ヘクターは細筆に替え、ぎざぎざの線に清水を置き、左下隅を持ち上げて流れを逸らした。流れ出した水は一点に集まりまた離れたが、上がったクリップがさらなる動きを止め、連鎖は弱まった。彼は新しい形を受け入れ、色を濃くして遠くの崖に変え、空を飛ぶ鳥と響かせた。パレットのそばですすぎカップが小さな弧を描いて揺れ続け、薄いさざ波が縁へ向かって滑っていた。
