A second pair of footprints pressed deep into the warm gravel told Boris that another visitor was already studying the hedge wall ahead, and a soft rustle revealed Felix easing a stray twig off his sleeve. Boris’s first goal felt simple: follow the coloured ribbons toward the centre and meet halfway with his friend so they could compare shortcuts. The plan stalled at the first wide junction. Two ribbons had been exposed to sun for weeks; the cloth had been bleached until only dry threads remained. Boris rubbed them between finger and thumb, but no hint of red or pink survived. He paced the junction twice, boots grinding gritty stones, then lifted his canvas sling over one shoulder and tried to remember the garden map pinned outside the entrance arch.

Freshly cut hedge ends, still damp and slightly sticky, formed a narrow passage to the south. Boris turned there, trusting the novelty of that sharper scent as a guide, yet the path split again beside a bed of lavender. Here the steady hum of bees grew louder; their steadfast buzz circled the taller blooms that faced the sun. A thought caught him: if he had kept trusting those faded ribbons, he would have wandered in loops until closing time. He waited, counting the rhythm of the insects, and noticed they gathered only where sunlight touched the hedge tops. Timing his step with a moving patch of brightness, he chose the fork that kept the warmth on his left arm. Felix’s voice drifted from somewhere beyond a thin wall of boxwood, but no direction emerged from the muffled sound.

At the next lookout corner, Boris rose on tiptoe. Above the green maze roof, the tiled ridge of the old tea-cottage shone amber against sky, offering a distant landmark. He shifted the stone arrow someone had set on the gravel so it pointed toward that roof, hoping the mark might help Felix later. Confident, he moved on, gravel murmuring under each stride. Behind him, a single pebble from the rearranged arrow slipped free and rolled into a crack between two larger stones.
