Cardboard Sag and the Paused Marble-

English 原文
"Sparrow on the shelf edge!" Keira whispers. She freezes, and the small bird flicks its brown wings above the starting ramp. The opalescent marble waiting on a hardcover shivers under the tiny breeze, then stays put. Pierce sits cross-legged at the supply pile, scissors snipping a new tube; warm lamplight pools around his hands while a stale patch of air lingers below the shade. A thin paperback had been wedged beneath the launch tube earlier, yet its glossy cover keeps sliding. Keira slides two fingers under the cardboard and raises it a millimetre; the tube holds, and the glass bead skims through the straight section, rattling like dry seeds.
A dull thud from the book-and-block platform answers the adjustment. Lifting the front tube has stolen weight from the stack behind it; the thick art book now tilts, and the turn connector sags into a flat line. Keira eases the marble backward with a pencil, then presses fresh tape along the wobbling joint. The sag vanishes, yet she overhears Pierce’s quiet confession while he steadies a rear support: one wooden block slipped when she shifted her weight, leaving a finger-wide gap below a ramp. If the block slipped again, the marble would stop long before the landing bowl. She folds a square of spare cardboard, tucks it under the loose block, and lets the ramp settle at an almost-steep angle. The next run glides, slows at the shallow bend, then gathers enough speed to clatter into the ceramic bowl; the startled sparrow darts through the open window and disappears.
Hours later, the living room lies still under cooler lamplight. Taped seams hold, yet the middle ramp droops by the width of a coin, and the final turn leans outward, marked by a faint cardboard crease. On the phone screen left beside the supply pile, a frozen frame shows Keira whisking the opalescent marble toward the bowl.
