Grain Inside the Fold-

English 原文
Wind nudged a narrow white triangle across the grass, its nose flattened and one wing bent upward. The damaged paper slid downhill until a small rise stopped it, as if petrified mid-glide. Kay followed the movement, knees flexing against the slope, and pinched the nose between thumb and forefinger. Dew clung to the underside, adding weight that made the sheet sag in his grip. A magpie hopped sideways nearby, tilting its head whenever the paper rustled. Two dusty footpaths met behind the bird, forming a rough crossroad that separated the launch hilltop from the folding bench. At that bench Yara sorted supplies, the ruler tapping against a canvas knowledge pouch hanging at her hip. An adult knelt farther off, turning a stick of chalk over the grass to finish the wide target circle. The field offered common ground where people, wind, and wings paused between throws.
Kay squeezed the tired plane along its center line, trying to sharpen the softened ridge. The crease fought back; moisture had stiffened the fibres into an uneven spine, so the two wings sat asymmetrical. He flicked his wrist and released the craft from ankle height. It leapt forward, wobbled, then dropped short of the circle, its tail brushing damp blades. Kay jogged down, calves tightening with each downhill step, and ran his thumb along the soggy fold again. A quick glance at the bench showed only two fresh sheets remaining, yet the curled nose still carried enough shape to reveal something new. He turned the plane over and noticed the paper grain ran across the wing rather than along it; that sideways grain explained each leftward tilt after launch.
Instead of unfolding a new sheet, Kay knelt on a flat stone by the adjustment area and pressed the damp nose against the stone’s edge to squeeze out water. With both thumbs he bent one wing tip upward and left the other flat, hoping the extra drag would cancel the grain’s hidden pull. Yara approached, knees brushing tall grass, and shook two paper clips into his palm from the knowledge pouch. Kay chose the lighter clip and slid it halfway along the nose; the magpie fluttered to the bench rail, feathers rippling at the sudden shine. A stray gust sketched ripples across the target circle, then faded. Kay rose, shoulders squared, stepped back to the launch hilltop, and his arm started forward with the adjusted plane balanced on open fingers.
