English 原文
Warm clay dust clung to Jude's fingertips as he lifted a shallow bowl from the felt pad and touched its rim to his ear. He aimed to judge the ring, yet the ceiling fan above sent a steady rush of warm air that blurred each note like water over stone. The kiln had been shut down two hours earlier, but its soft hum still joined the fan, masking difference between ping and thud. Jude tried the rubber mallet first, tapping eagerly, then the wooden dowel, listening again; the two tools produced tones so close that he faced a small dilemma—pass an uncertain piece or discard a possible treasure. While he hesitated, the fan’s gust brushed powdered glaze from a towering stack of colour tiles, and the fine dust drifted toward the testing table.
The falling powder landed on the felt just as Jude placed the next bowl down, forming a thin, slippery film. The bowl slid half a finger’s width, nudged another, and both pieces chimed in unison with a bright, unexpected pitch that cut through the workshop noise. That double ring solved the prior quandary: the first bowl’s tone had been dulled only by the crowded spacing. To compare properly, he carried the questionable piece across to the glaze reference shelf, knocked gently against a flawless sample, then returned. On the way back, the fan cycle ended; still air offered perfect silence, yet a new risk appeared—the dust-coated felt might let the entire row creep forward. Jude reached for a nearby cotton towel, folded it twice, and wedged it against the felt’s edge, halting the slow drift. As he smoothed the towel, a single copper-gold flake that had loosened from a tile above caught the same warm draft and drifted lazily toward the rim, spinning in a slow loop above the wood.
