English 原文
A steel-grey vice, three hanging strips of coarse sandpaper, and a pale pine block waited under the patio lamp. Rosa braced the block with one hand and drew the sanding block across the top face; every push released a sizzling rasp that bounced off the roof, yet shallow rings streaked the surface where the foam backing pressed unevenly. A knot darker than the surrounding grain looked like a tiny fossil caught in amber. When she paused, the block slumped sideways because the clamp jaw had been tightened earlier by Grey on only one side. If she had noticed the slack before beginning, the face would now lie flat.
She stepped aside while Grey, sharpening a pencil at the oil shelf, stayed focused on the blade. Near the dust-clearing area, she brushed curls of sawdust into a shallow tray, then tore a fresh strip from the roll; the dry rip echoed like candlelight flickering inside a stone chapel. She carried the strip to the pegboard, slipped it between finer grits, and swept the cool metal mat with a damp cloth. The rhythm of sweeping, hanging, and wiping formed a quiet ceremony that filled the covered space. A blue-grey breeze crossed the open side of the patio, lifting a strand of hair across her cheek before it dropped again.
When she returned to empty the dust tray, the pine block still leaned against the vice screw, tilted exactly where it had slipped. Without thinking, she slid a thin metal ruler under the low corner, wedging the wood level. The sanding block glided across the grain once more; this time the foam stayed firm, and the rasp softened until the face turned smooth and pale, reflecting a muted glow the color of candlelight. As she lifted the block for inspection, a single bead of resin rolled along the edge and stopped beside the fossil-shaped knot, catching the overhead light like an unwritten gift.
