Flight of the Paper Roof-

English 原文
Twelve narrow rows in the rainfall logbook already carried pencilled figures from earlier showers, while twelve more waited blank. The alternating dark graphite and pale paper formed a ladder pattern that stopped exactly at the sheet’s centre fold. Rain rattled over the porch roof, then rolled into softer taps on the slate stones beyond. Each gust launched a fresh burst of drum-rolls, masking the dull plink that echoed inside the glass gauge. Behind the kitchen window, Seth kept quiet vigilance, his chair creaking whenever he leaned forward to check Mae’s footing. A bustling hush rose from the flower beds, worms shifting soil with faint scrapes that joined the steady rainfall chorus.
When the shower thinned, Mae lifted the pencil and stepped onto the path, hoping to mark the next reading. Slate slabs now glistened like midnight glass, and her boot soles squeaked, warning that any rush could slide her sideways. Above, the big tree dumped uneven plops that rang against the gauge rim and spattered false ripples across the meniscus. Mae crouched and eyed the scale; the tilted post showed eight millimetres on one side, ten on the other. If Mae had kept writing the first number only, the monthly total would have drifted far from the truth. She straightened, showed small bravery against the chill drops, and shuffled around the cylinder to read each side twice.
While circling, she saw rain collect faster on the downhill rim, the low side chiming with tiny overflows. She tore a blank scrap from the damp edge of the logbook and wedged it like a makeshift roof over the opening. Under that paper, the gauge fell silent, giving her thirty heartbeats to average both numbers and pencil them beside a fresh colon. Graphite spread wider than usual but stayed readable. A broad concrete planter stood nearby, heavy and low enough to resemble a quiet garden bunker. She tucked the damp scrap beneath its rough rim, saving the strip for whatever burst arrived next. From the lower branch, a sparrow tilted its head toward the paper roof propped on the gauge. It dropped onto the rim, stabbed once at the fluttering edge, and the paper flipped into the air.
