Olive drew up her rod, and only a bare hook glimmered in the glare beneath the dock end. She stepped toward the shore equipment area where a cardboard carton of dough sat, its lid half open beside a folded towel. The last two dough balls already carried a sprinkle of powdered cheese, releasing a tantalizing aroma over the warm planks. Axel sat near the shore end, pencil moving over paper and unaware of her snag. The extra hooks had been stored in a small tin back on shore, yet she hoped the first one would keep working. She pressed one dough ball around the hook, tamped the edge with her thumb, and eyed the dappled shadow under the willow-root water zone. A narrow band of courageous red paint along her rod blank reflected the afternoon blaze like a thin flare. With a steady breath she swung the line forward; the float landed beside a darker patch where fish often gathered. The dock groaned once, then the line tightened and stopped, as though an underwater branch had grabbed it. Olive lifted the tip and gave a firm pull, yet only sharper tension came back through the rod’s spine.

She shifted to the mid-dock shade zone, letting a tactful sideways angle ease the strain while glare dimmed behind the willow canopy. A slow lift-and-drop loosened the line; suddenly the hook sprang free, and the sinker swung in a tight arc toward the mooring post. Metal tapped wood; the impact rocked a small plastic carton of worms balanced near Axel’s sketchbook, nudging it toward the dock edge. The rigid box slid fast across the sunlit plank, gathering speed as each uneven ridge bounced beneath it. Olive stepped quickly, her shoe planting against the carton just before it could tip into the dark water. The chain reaction halted; only the rope on the post kept trembling, shedding tiny droplets that flashed when they met the light. She added a fresh, smaller sprinkle of cheese to the still-intact dough, mindful of the thinning supply. Returning to her first spot, she dropped the bait back where the hook had been bare minutes earlier, letting the float glide. The float drifted outward again, tracing a widening arc toward the willow shade.
