English 原文
Rough bark pressed against Wren's palms as she slid the long branch across the damp soil toward the flower bed. Sam balanced nearby, the tape he had been using to check the planting hole still dangling from his wrist like soft ribbon. She laid the branch over a flat stone taken from the path edge, seeking leverage to budge the round obstacle. The lever's tip scraped under the stone, pressure sent a hidden earthworm squirming upward and breaking the boundary between moist layers. A robin along the fence spotted the sudden motion, dropped in a swift glide, and clutched the branch beside Wren's elbow. The branch dipped under the bird’s weight, and Wren tightened her shoulders while tiny grains of soil trembled over her boots.
The unexpected load shifted the lever farther than planned, and the round stone rocked once, losing equilibrium in a slow roll. The flat stone had been chosen for its smooth face earlier that morning, but its light weight now proved unhelpful. It slid nearly a handspan and pressed against a thick root, then the makeshift fulcrum popped free and bounced into the mulch. Damp chips scattered upward, and sunlight caught them, flashing a quick spectrum that dotted Sam's sleeve with bright spots. The lever now swung toward Sam’s leg, so he drove his boot onto the branch and forced it downward until motion ceased. Dew that had gathered on the bark started to glide along the grain, dripping into the newly opened groove beside the root. A dark beetle crawled from beneath the displaced stone and crept across the curved surface, testing its changed slope with careful antennae.
Released from its hunt, the robin sprang upward, wingbeats pushing cool air across Wren's cheeks as it zipped over the bean poles. Those slim poles bent toward one another, forming a living arcade that rustled when the bird brushed the upper leaves. The sway sent loose petals drifting across the bed, and one landed on the beetle, which shrugged it off and continued forward. Sam wiped soil from his gloves, then nudged the stone deeper into its notch, ensuring the boundary stayed open for planting. High above, the robin banked over the hedge and vanished beyond the fence, its shadow racing along the boards toward the street.
