English 原文
A thin metallic pang hopped from the bent spoon, and the clay disc replied with a muted tap beneath the low branch. Willa aimed to add a freshly glazed disc pressed with a blue delphinium shape, hoping to brighten the backyard chorus. Lucia, reading on a blanket nearby, clipped the string’s end with careful snips before handing it over. Willa let clean cord roll from its cardboard tube, threaded it through an old iron key, and knotted the loop quickly. The key’s weight jerked her wrist; once released, the disc stopped swinging, its voice buried under the heavy neighbour. She had tried loosening the knot twice, yet each pull tightened the twist, and the spoon kept chiming out of rhythm.
Wind rose again, shaking leaves and pushing the smaller beads into a muddled rattle while the lawn sprinkler hissed beyond the fence. Crossing to the supply box, Willa brushed past bark where ants marched; the tiny habitat crackled under their legs. When she returned, three strings had been snarled together, and the spoon, beads, and disc thumped as one dull bundle. Her first pull failed because the gust still swung the branch, so she waited through two slow breaths until the air hushed. In that pause, the iron key hung lower than the others. Its steadfastness of weight eased the twist apart just enough to show daylight between threads. She tapped the clay disc to encourage a trial note, then slid the waiting knot downward, making the key the lowest piece. If another burst arrived, the key would draw the lines straight rather than choke them.
Hours later, long after Willa had gone inside for supper, a milder breeze slid beneath the branch without company. The reorganised chimes moved gently. The key kept them spaced, and faint circles of clay dust had dried where quick fingers once worked. Only the soft scrape of metal against ceramic drifted out now and then between long stretches of quiet.
