English 原文

Grainy warmth pressed into Vera’s fingertips as she balanced on the sun-kissed stepping stone fixed beside the near handrail. A layer of dew cooled the first plank, yet the rope above had soaked up light and felt sticky against her knuckles. The volunteer had announced the one-at-a-time order and then folded his arms while the queue behind her stood waiting. Oscar shifted his weight like a slow drum on a stage, ready for his turn. Vera aimed for a steady pattern, yet the bridge ran through a whole gamut of tiny tilts with every step. Her boot skidded across the slick board, the plank dipped, and the next board lifted, twisting her hips off center. She clamped the hemp rail, shoulders tightening, and waited until the stubborn wobble finally faded. Forcing speed, she realised, had been barking up the wrong tree against the bridge’s own timing.

Vera measured the rhythm, then bent her knees lower, moving with the sway instead of resisting. Halfway across, the same slip returned when a plank sagged under her heel with a duller knock. That board had been loosened by years of footsteps, so each push threw extra motion into the rails. Oscar noticed the rope by the bank, curled his hands around it, and leaned backward to add counter-tension. The bridge flattened for a breathing moment, granting Vera a window to slide her boot to the plank centre. One virtue of the thick hemp frame appeared then: its stiffness spread Oscar’s pull across the boards like a slow ripple. Vera let the ripple pass, timed her next step with its return, and cleared the final plank onto the far stone. The stepping stone that had been dry beneath her fingers now shone with small droplets shaken loose from the ropes.
