Cold mist clung to the handrail's underside, leaving his fingertips damp and lightly prickling against the hemp. Dawn dew glazed the boards, and their slick grain forced him to flatten each step. Germination of clover between the loose planks showed an alliance of green shoots and weathered wood. Acting as pathfinder for the waiting queue, he signalled Luna with a raised thumb; she called, "Almost there!" The bridge answered with a wave that rolled toward the sag like a slow drum. When a breeze threaded the valley, the planks clattered, and his second pebble bounced between the ropes. He paused on the fourth board, adjusting his stance while watery light flickered up through the finger-wide gaps.

A heavier step jolted a moss patch below, and beetles erupted from the fuzz, peppering the morning air. One beetle slapped against a silvery dragonfly; startled, the insect darted upward and brushed the low hemp rail. That flick pushed dry, sharp dust into Emil’s face, and the boy rocked backward so the bridge swung wider. Several knots had been tightened during last season’s inspection, yet the middle rope still flexed under the load. Emil slid boots outward, toes gripping plank edges, and his palms pressed hard against the warmer upper rope. If the wind rose again, the span would clap louder, so he waited through two breaths until the sway lessened. With balance steadier, he guided the third, fourth, and fifth pebbles into the stream at matching intervals in rhythmic arcs. The final pebble left his palm, slipped through the gap, and spun along the current below the lifting plank.
