Six Coins and the Turning Drum-

English 原文
Sneaker soles drummed beneath the folding table; Harris already balanced a wide loaf of damp towels there, his elbows locked to keep the load steady while sudsy water slid from the lowest corner. Olive shifted her own basket higher against her ribs, the weight pressing into skin like a dull stone. Mom had asked her to move the load to the dryer, and the machine’s display showed “25¢ × 6”. Two crumpled bills came from Olive’s pocket. The change machine swallowed one, vibrated, and released only two quarters that landed with a short metallic hop—barely enough to start the countdown. The gap between requirement and supply felt exact, like a math line on a high school chalkboard: four quarters missing.
Olive fed the second bill. The mechanism whirred, then stayed silent; the tray stayed empty. She dug in the basket’s mesh, found nothing but lint. Harris straightened, knees creaking, and produced one lonely coin from his jeans. Even together they still lacked three. A worn armchair beside the window sat tilted on one leg; Olive slid a hand along its cushioned ridge and brushed a forgotten quarter lodged near the seam. The find bent their spines into a brief, shared grin, though neither tried to articulate relief. Two coins short. They glanced at the dryer bank—a stranger’s cycle had been completed, and quarters lay inside the still-warm drum as thank-you change. Olive stopped; taking them would break their unspoken compromise with the room. Instead, Harris knelt, sweeping under the folding table. Dust coated his fingertips, yet another quarter rolled out, bumping his knuckle before stopping. One coin remained.
If the coin slot jammed again, the pile of wet fabric would grow heavier with every passing minute. Olive’s palm swept the tile once more, and the final quarter appeared near the base of the trash bin, as thin as a dropped button. Six coins now pressed into her fist. She slid them, one by one, until the display flashed “0:45” and the drum began to turn without a sound. Warm air soon puffed from the vent. Minutes later, Olive carried a stack of shirts against her chest while Harris tucked towels under his arm; both bundles swayed gently as they headed for the door.
