To conserve energy, he dragged his soles instead of lifting them, widening a packed lane from the fence drift to the fort. Flora kept moulding bricks, yet the open gap tightened the same way each minute. Forrest repeated the lift, but this time altered the order of motions. First he trudged to the porch, split the thin ice on the pail with a fist, and dripped a small dose of water along the waiting groove; the film quickly glazed. While the surface stiffened, he bent for more snow and felt wires snag his glove—an old kitchen whisk, forgotten under the fresh layer, surfaced at his heel. The pause cost seconds, yet the short wait allowed the glaze to harden. He packed another brick from the drift, breath pushing warm dampness into his scarf. The moment the wind eased, he hauled the block forward, elbows shaking under its weight, and fitted it onto the shimmering ledge. He kept pressing the brick against the damp edge while new flakes slid over his sleeves.
