English 原文
"Next snowball here," Ivan murmured. Ivan pressed the fresh sphere against the half-built dome on the flat board, noticing five neat seams repeating around its belly like a pale caterpillar curled in snow. Afternoon light poured honey across his sleeves, painting the packed wall amber where his gloves left smooth arcs. He aimed to finish before the sun left the yard, yet the heat from his palms had already thinned the earlier layer; a dull crunch showed where the inner crust gave way. When he slid the shaping board aside, the top segment sagged, and half the curve collapsed inward. Several snowballs had been placed too close together, and the pattern that first looked perfect now betrayed a weak ring. He scooped loose powder, trying to patch the gap, but each touch widened it.
He tightened the straps on his mittens and trudged to the snow-collection patch by the wooden fence, where untouched heaps rose almost to his knees. The crust there cracked with a crisp note, and dense grains below packed firmly; they promised a stronger shell. He rolled two larger balls, splashed a trickle from the garden tap across their sides, and watched a nervous shimmer race over the glaze before tiny beads began to emerge and freeze into clear studs. Back at the shaping area he rebuilt the fallen arc, leaving a wider cavity inside. Just then, Paul lifted the glass jar on the front step and called that the candle would disappear unless the hollow could fit its copper rim. That warning shifted Ivan’s approach. He slid an evergreen bough under the opening, twisted it gently, and flakes peeled away to enlarge the space without piercing the wall. If the surface froze again now, the next layer would refuse to grip, so he hurried, locking each new piece against the grain of the last. When the dome finally stood round and even, he lifted it toward the step. Ivan strode past the fence with the lantern cradled in both arms, while a single snowball near the base inched outward unnoticed.
