Earlier that morning the reams had been divided among classrooms, and one bundle had been shoved deep beyond the stuck panel. Soren pushed again; wood scraped but stopped. Ilsa counted three slow beats, then eased her weight at the same moment he pulled, trying a new rhythm rather than raw force. Footsteps surged outside as another class passed, rattling the cupboard wall. The jolt dislodged a small tub of vanilla frosting perched on a higher ledge; its lid spun, landed upright, and balanced like a coin. A striped school cat, startled by the tapping plastic, slipped between Soren’s ankles, nose twitching at the sweet smell. Its tail flicked against the door, nudging the panel just a fraction wider.

Ilsa slid a hand through the new gap first and tugged the hidden bundle free. She passed half the sheets to Soren with a quiet flourish, then steadied the frosting tub before it toppled again. The cat, now satisfied, padded toward the warm patch of sunlight pooling across the corridor tiles. Soren guided the door closed as far as it allowed without trapping whiskers, and a thin drift of powdered dust fell from the rail onto his shoes. Behind them, the hum of distant chatter mixed with the soft buzz of fluorescent tubes while the cat’s striped back slipped around the corner, its paws leaving faint, even prints that continued down the polished floor.
