English 原文
Five sheets of blue poster board remained on the classroom shelf; the once thick stack looked wafer-thin. Lily had already counted them twice, knitting her fingers as the polished corridor floor caught fluorescent reflections. A project poster still needed space for a plaza sketch and bold letters that would sparkle beneath corridor lights. To finish before the next bell, she and Quinn crossed the echoing hallway toward the supply closet. Their footsteps squeaked like slow brushes on glass, and cool air drifted from the stairwell window behind them. Inside the closet, paper reams stacked shoulder-high shared shelves with paint, glitter, and packets of seeds to sow in science class. The door, however, moved barely a finger’s width before stopping with a dull metallic groan. A hairline fracture ran across its plastic handle.
Quinn braced the edge while Lily shoved in slow pulses, her shoulder nudging the panel open. At the third shove, the rail wheel rotated grudgingly, letting the door slide just far enough for an arm. The panel had been painted steel-grey years earlier and carried scuffs where backpacks had scraped past. Lily pulled a block of poster board free, yet the movement nudged the shelf above. A jar filled with silver glitter teetered, released a metallic ping, and tipped forward onto the floor. Hundreds of silver specks migrated across the tiles like tiny stars breaking formation and drifting apart. They needed the paper, yet they also needed enough glitter to outline the plaza sketch later. Quinn crouched, guiding the jar while Lily scooped a shimmering mound back inside with a folded poster corner. A thin trail remained, but most crystals were saved, and the poster edges stayed uncreased.
They wedged a spare marker under the door to hold it partly open, accepting a narrower gap rather than risk another spill. Stepping into the corridor, they carried the reclaimed sheets between them while footsteps from other students echoed ahead. The flickering closet tube had cast a blue-grey sheen across one corner, leaving that edge slightly darker than the rest. Lily shrugged, balancing usefulness against perfection, and guided the stack toward their classroom before the bell could break the hush. Behind them, one glitter fleck slipped from Lily’s shoe, caught corridor light for an instant, then drifted unseen into a floor-tile groove.
