English 原文

The stiff paper of Warren’s folded nautical chart rasped under his thumb as he pressed it flat on the stone border beside the shallow rink. A bright shaft of morning light cut across the ice, and its glare lit the tiny wooden boat he and Lily had brought. She nudged the hull onto the centre ice, imagining a slow voyage from one rim to the far bank. His boot scraped forward, yet a frozen leaf near the edge caught the sole and made him stumble sideways, sending shallow cracks spreading like pale threads beneath the surface. He had smoothed the ice with the side of his boot again when a startled crow knocked Warren’s scarf off the bench behind them.

The scarf rolled toward a sunlit patch of pavement. Warren chased it across the dry grit, leaving Lily alone on the bright sheet. While he stepped away, the sun warmed the rink; a thin film of meltwater formed, turning the centre into an unfamiliar mirror. The boat, once still, began to glide on the slick layer, picking up speed. Meltwater slid outward, found the ridge left by the earlier crack, and diverted toward the leaf bump. The stream pushed a rocking twig onto thinner ice near Lily’s heel, so she shifted her weight and guided the twig aside with the stiff glove lying nearby. The glove blocked the trickle, lifting the twig just enough for it to freeze in place as the chill returned in a passing cloud shadow.

Warren returned, breath fogging the dim air, and saw the boat resting halfway across a glare-bright pool, its planned route altered yet complete in its own way. He adapted, marking the changed course with the point of a spare twig and calling it a finished map. Beside his knee, the nautical chart that had been crisp now curled; a lifted corner fluttered toward the ice with each bright gust.
