Cold, compact sand adhered to Grey's fingers as he packed it into a chipped plastic bucket. The edge dug into his palm, and he winced before pressing down again. A brief metallic squeak escaped the loose handle when he flipped the mould onto the damp platform. Seawater had already seeped through the crack, and the tower caved along one side as he lifted. Wet grains streamed away, glinting silver beneath the pale afternoon light, while the shape sagged toward the creeping tide line. Grey placed the flawed bucket on a darkened patch of sand, the half-formed wall leaning into its own shadow.

Beyond the moat channel, Raine crouched beside a scatter of shells. Each fragment flashed like frost-white glass whenever the water slipped away. Grey joined her, loading a palmful of shards to edge the unfinished rampart. On his way inland he stepped through warmer, loose sand that rose around his ankles and crumbled like coarse sugar. He sprinkled the lighter grains over the glossy wall, giving the surface a thin matte layer. Farther along, he traced the moat with a flat wooden stick. Pressure bent the wood, and it snapped, leaving a blunt blade that shaved unevenly. A fringe of foam had been carried farther inland by the rising tide, darkening the sand around their footprints. Nearby, muffled laughter drifted from a striped towel, while gull cries sketched quick arcs overhead. A soggy ribbon of confetti slid across the trench. Its faded hues provided unexpected inspiration against the steel-grey ground.

A stronger rush of water swept across the platform. It rolled the abandoned bucket against Grey’s ankle before sliding back to sea. He caught the mould without thinking; sand already clung to its damp interior. This time he packed the mixture loosely, then tapped the sides so moisture could drain through the crack. The cylinder slid free, and the split rim pressed a narrow groove that resembled a doorway, turning the flaw into decoration. Raine shifted aside to shield the new tower from the next surge. A gull tilted its wings, glided down, and snatched the remaining strip of confetti from the moat.
