Stella arrived with two smooth slabs that clacked together like plates balanced by an experienced waitress crossing a tiled floor. One candidate slab had been polished by years of rain, its edges whispering against his palm when he turned it. The first layer accepted them with gentleness; only a faint scrape followed before the stack deepened to three strong levels. From the downhill observation point the valley’s bright outlook glimmered, and loose gravel clicked under their boots during each return trip.

Soon the flattest candidates had been used, and only round or heavy blocks rattled inside the sorting hollow on the flat boulder. Each new placement gently lifted the rising centre of gravity along the already brittle stack of stone. The column hummed with tiny shudders whenever a sudden gust dragged through the scrub and shook the higher layers. If the wind grew stronger, the fourth stone might twist, so they paused, weighing which plan still made sense. Rafe had planned a proud tower of seven, yet the shrinking supply forced persistent checks and finally a smaller ambition. Their persistence turned quiet as they flipped the last flat piece several times, searching for the face that stayed silent after landing.

They removed the wobbling fourth layer, and a hush replaced the earlier rattles as the breeze raced by without harm. Five stones now formed the cairn, the top one thin enough for the wind to pass over rather than push aside. Stella brushed gravel from her knees, then tapped the stack; no echo answered, only the distant buzz of hidden crickets. They exchanged a grin, already planning new arrangements if stronger breezes appeared later on the climb. Down the slope, a loosened pebble ticked against a larger rock, and the sound drifted upward past their finished work.
