English 原文
Cold, slightly rough linen brushed Nina's knuckles as she lifted a folded cloth from the stone basin. She had rinsed smaller wheels before, and two amber-rinded giants now waited beside the dripping spring. A small oak casket beside the basin held coarse salt that glittered under honeyed lamps. The air near the basin tasted faintly of whey, while amber light drew soft shadows along the limestone. She shook a pinch into the water, hoping the mixture would spread smoothly across the shining surface. The cloth, however, had been folded for hours; a sharp crease ran across its middle, and water clung only to the edges. She pressed the damp linen over the first wheel, but brine spread unevenly, leaving a pale stipple of salt crystals like sand. With expectation of a smooth surface fading, she dipped the cloth again, squeezed, and tried a firmer swipe.
Soft footsteps echoed, and Ulric paused beside the thermometer wall, notebook open from comparing the chamber readings. He angled the copper lamp toward the basin and nudged the stone spout so the spring produced a steadier ribbon. Beads of moisture glimmered on the glass dial, the needle hovering just below the pencilled humidity line. Ulric murmured that if the cloth were too wet, the rind would soften too quickly, so balance mattered.
Nina kept her method but patiently refolded the cloth along a fresh crease, carefully trapping sparkling salt inside like filling in pastry. Together they pressed, one guiding the heavy wheel, the other smoothing the linen in slow amber arcs. A swallowtail fluttered above the basin, its yellow wings flicking droplets across the oak plank under the warm light. When they stepped back, the rind gleamed bronze, though a faint stipple near the edge promised another careful pass later. The swallowtail circled once more, then drifted lazily through the tunnel mouth, vanishing into the meadow’s bright haze outside.
