English 原文
Crushed mint sent a sharp, cool scent into Fleur’s nose the instant her shoe pressed the herb patch. Just beyond the leaves, a single shoeprint lay in the damp soil, its rim still smooth. Evening brightness shifted toward pale steel. Long fence shadows climbed the grass, and the shed hinge moaned when the wind nudged it. A shallow runoff channel, swollen with surplus rainwater, cut across the strip between her and the back fence zone. At first glance, the slick rim looked thin, yet its surface shone like glue under the cooling light. She placed one boot on the edge; sticky mud swallowed the sole, gripped hard, and refused to release. Fleur braced with a palm against the silver bark of a low branch and pulled. The muck refused, and a tremor ran through her arms before she wrenched the boot free, splattering dark water over her shin.
She staggered backward onto firmer grass, droplets swinging from the laces and flashing blue-grey under the last bright slice of sky. The failed crossing had cost valuable light; sunflower heads now hid half their faces behind steel-coloured shadow. A brisk walk around the channel looked possible, yet hedge branches pinched the path so tight that every touch rustled. She tried to navigate through that greenery anyway, and twigs snapped like dry chalk, giving away her position. She crouched, nose close to the mud she had disturbed, and spotted a second footprint pointing toward the stacked crates. The very stickiness that trapped her boot had preserved each ridge of the unknown runner’s sole like a mould. Fleur traced the line of prints with a stick, then straightened when the crates blocked her view. She leaned her shoulder against the top crate; the swollen timber merely scraped the ground and stubbornly stayed unmoved.
Nearby, a dented watering can tilted within the sunflower border, holding water left from afternoon chores. Fleur had lifted it earlier while friends shared grass rings at the counting tree, so she knew the weight. She carried the can back, tipped the spout, and poured a narrow stream along the crate’s base. Mud thinned, grains slid aside, and the wood, once pinned by suction, began to shift under gentle pressure. Its grip on the ground had been loosened by the same moisture that first slowed her steps. A third pull opened a gap, just wide enough for a pale eye and a held breath to appear. The final drop struck the earth exactly as Fleur reached through the opening and lightly touched Nina’s hidden sleeve. She then set the emptied can upright beside the stone border, its metal sides already turning cool in the dusk.
