English 原文
Most lanterns swayed in loose circles, but five fish-shaped ones hung at the same height like a narrow staircase. Luke paused beside the reflection pond, feeling the packed earth rough under his shoes and watching how the fish reflections formed a second glowing ridge line beneath the water’s skin. A small grey dog trotted beside his friend Wade, its leash brushing Luke’s wooden dowel and sending a light thrill through the stick. Luke’s own star-shaped lantern felt slightly heavier on one side; the lowest point of its wire frame had been bent while he was still at the craft station, so the cellophane pulled unevenly. He pinched the soft corner, smoothing the warm plastic just enough for the light to spread without obvious gaps, then continued along the path where overlapping colours flickered over Wade’s lifelong denim jacket like moving tiles.
A sudden clatter from the food stall corner—metal tongs striking the grill—made the dog jump sideways toward a pile of fallen leaves. Wade followed to steady the leash, and Luke set his lantern on a flat stone so he could clear a safe space. During the brief scramble, volunteers had quarantined a stack of cracked wire frames on a cart, blocking the wind and trapping warm air around Luke’s lantern. By the time he lifted it again, moisture rising from the damp stone had softened the paste on one star point; that point sagged inward, turning the lantern’s light into a stepped pattern that echoed the fish row above the pond. Luke could have returned to the crowded craft station, but he chose to fold the soft point inward with two fingertips and keep walking. If he had hurried back immediately, the paste would have stiffened flat and the new pattern never would have appeared. Luke raised his uneven star beside Wade’s perfect fish, and the two glowing shapes crossed over the dark path in overlapping bands of colour.
