English 原文

Five mirrors already made a zig-zag ladder of light across the carpet, yet the bright spot stalled halfway to the white card. Sun-warmed curtain cloth gave off a faint wool-and-linen smell, and the warmed book spines beside it released a sweet, dusty spice. Tara knelt in that aroma cloud, her knees pressing into carpet that smelled like stored winter coats. She had unwrapped a sixth mirror, the plastic backing still carrying a sharp synthetic tang, and she paused to ponder the next angle. A low utterance from a hallway radio drifted in, mixed with the waxy scent of floor polish, while an adult near the window kept turning pages of a magazine.

Tara propped the new mirror against a narrow box that smelled of dried glue. The beam leapt, but each bounce lost strength, the brightness thinning like the dilution of syrup in water. Dust motes hung in the weaker shaft, scattering light into pale gold streaks. Wanting to thicken the reflection, she taped a strip of foil behind the mirror, the adhesive giving off a vinegar-sharp odour, then added a slim wooden wedge that smelled of fresh sawdust. The extra weight bowed the sun-heated book beneath; within seconds the mirror slipped, and the beam slapped across the ceiling. A breeze swept in as Hugo opened the door, carrying the cold scent of corridor stone and rolling a pencil along the desk. He caught the wobbling box before it tipped, his fingers leaving a faint leathery scent from the pencil case he still held.

The two of them watched the beam drift. Tara pinched the hot foil and stripped it away; the sudden removal let the mirror sit lighter, and the light line tightened at once. Hugo nudged the box a single millimetre; the focused spot slid neatly onto the card, glowing as steady as a coin. Warm curtain air began to dissipate upward, taking with it the spice of paper and the sharper smell of tape. A clear sleeve from the last mirror slipped off the desk edge and drifted below the chair, invisible to both of them.
