A distant bicycle tyre whispered on wet pavement, and the faint ring of a gutter drip echoed between courtyard walls. Wyatt unfolded his small sketchbook, hoping to catch the sharp mirror of sky hiding in the puddle’s centre. The puddle was a leftover breath from last night’s early monsoon rains, shrinking by the minute. Before his pencil touched paper, a mild breeze rattled leaves overhead and scribbled ripples across the once-still surface. He waited, counting the seconds until the rings faded, but another ripple followed as footsteps vibrated the stone. The reflection returned patchy; branch outlines broke apart, then merged again, too unsteady for a clean first sketch. Inside the arcade behind them, heavy drapes trapped oppressive heat and pushed a faint, acrid smell of dust into the open.

Trent paused his drawing when another gust shivered the puddle and smudged Wyatt’s second set of careful lines. He set the chalk aside and lifted a broad sketchpad, forming a quiet wall against the breeze. Wyatt leaned nearer, using their shared shade to watch the evaporation rim creep inward in slow, silent steps. The surface finally stilled; a bubble tick, a drip tap, then branch outlines sharpened like fine glass. Tyres hissing beyond the wall trembled the stone and blurred the mirror. Trent lowered the pad almost to the water; Wyatt shortened each stroke between the fading rings. Mid-sketch, the shaded side shrank faster as a thin crack underneath drew water sideways, unnoticed moments earlier. The reflection vanished, and pale branching traces glimmered on the fresh stone where sediment still clung. Beside it, faint graphite smudges from Wyatt’s fingers streaked the page margin, a quiet record of their patient watch.
