A narrow cardboard strip, printed with faint blue marks, lay beside the ribbon spool as a length guide. Following it, she slipped a white tissue sheet decorated with silver paws along the bottom of her box. The first layer seemed to cushion the pastry, so she nodded and folded the sides inward.

Wanting extra support, Ella had already tucked a folded napkin over the croissant and slid a second tissue on top. To keep the lid steady, she pressed a sticker across the lid and drew the ribbon around twice before tying a bow. Heat rose from the bun-shaped croissant, fogging the box’s clear window with a bluish film. Within seconds, moisture beaded under the sticker, and the adhesive, softened by the warm air, loosened at one edge. Zeke’s perceptive eyes caught the curling edge, but his own box occupied both of his hands. That loose corner brushed the spinning ribbon spool, and an extra loop uncoiled, knocking Ella’s elbow. The thin stack rocked gently each time another customer brushed past.
