English 原文
Quinn tipped the bait cup, letting the third-to-last morsel roll against the rim. Warm planks pressed against his bare knees as he knelt in the mid-dock shade zone, sighting the cool patch beneath the willow roots where fish hovered. Vesper, whose vocation as a carpenter filled boxes with screws and clamps, sorted lures near the shore end, leaving Quinn to manage the rod. At dawn they had dug the doughy bait from the garden, and now only three pieces stayed soft. A knot in the wood had swelled through the afternoon heat, raising an uneven ridge that scratched his palm when he slid the tackle box closer. Beside it, a fallen willow branch sprawled across two planks, its skin half-sloughed, the peeled sections smooth like leather, the rest still rough. He pushed the branch with one hand; soaked fibers gripped the deck and the branch refused to budge.
Frustrated, he tried to cast around the obstacle. The rod jerked forward, yet the line brushed the branch, and the slack was pulled into an intricate loop that tightened on itself. The line had been twisted into that knot by the rough bark in a single blink. The hook plopped short, landing against underwater weed that swayed near the mooring post. A tug met only stubborn drag; the weed held fast. If the branch had been lighter, it would have skidded aside with that shove. Instead, his pull rocked it, and its tip bumped the bait cup. The plastic slid, tapped Vesper’s folding chair, and one precious bait piece skipped through a board gap into the green slough water below. Vesper’s head lifted at the clatter, but the chair legs pinned the cup, stopping further loss. Small ripples began to evolve outward, dark rings folding into pale glare.
Quinn bent low, studying the branch—the very length that had blocked his stance. Its forked end could reach below the dock. He slid the rod aside, gripped the branch trunk, and eased it between the planks until the smooth tip pressed the tensed line. A careful lift let the line glide upward; weight shifted from the weed to the wood in his hands. He braced the branch against the swollen ridge, using its stiffness to lever the hook clear. The float drifted free and bobbed toward the shadowed roots. The branch started to roll again, so he wedged its thick base under the mooring post where it stayed. After a fresh cast, the bait hovered exactly where he wanted. Quinn laid the rod beside the rope-wrapped post; the nylon filament quivered across the surface toward the quiet float.
