English 原文
Thread hummed softly between Gareth’s fingers as he drew it through the small loop at the lantern’s base opening. He and Yvette leaned over the stone table where blue dusk silvered the sheets of translucent paper. A kink in one bamboo rib forced the frame outward, so Gareth pinched the strip and coaxed it straight. Beyond the field, the glass roof of a conservatory caught the last light like a stack of cool mirrors. Dry grass, shorn after harvest, pressed warm against their shoes while nearby fuel pads waited in a metal tray.
An adult sparked a long lighter; a brief hiss marked the moment the wax pad caught and began to glow. Gareth lifted the lantern and walked to the holding zone, palms feeling heat stirring upward through the widening paper walls. A cousin’s shout rolled across the grass; the child had tripped, uprooting a clump of soil and scattering ribbon reels. Gareth set the lantern on the stone edge and jogged three steps to rescue the reels. During that short absence, the pad had melted unevenly; liquid wax pooled on one side, and the frame had been softening in the moist evening air. The fuel pad had been placed exactly in the centre earlier, but now it hung to one side, tilting the lantern. The tilt spilled a ribbon of warm air through the base, so lift weakened and the glowing envelope sagged while one panel darkened in patchy ovals.
Gareth slipped his thumbs under the bamboo rim, nudged the pad back, and rolled the frame a quarter turn. The sag eased; the lantern shivered, then regained shape, though the once-crisp angles now curved gently. If Gareth had kept his thumb on the frame, the ribs would have stayed even, yet the slight twist now promised a slower climb. Together they released the lantern and watched it drift sideways, edges glowing pale blue. Long after they stepped back, the ribbon at the wind-read clearing kept turning in small loops, tracing every cooler swirl that chased the departing sphere.
