A distant whir from the anemometer reached him as a long gust began its overture overhead. On the page, two early readings already formed the first ingredients of the day’s data. Speed numbers filled the margin, and a faint arrow pointed east-north-east. He had already logged two speeds earlier, but the direction line remained unfinished. The wooden framework around the stairwell hummed as wind slipped through the gaps. Hector, a centre volunteer, rested one palm on the rail above to signal he remained close. Vernon placed his pencil at the circle’s midpoint, ready to finish the direction line when the gust levelled. Above, the anemometer hum changed pitch like metal bees.

The hum fell away too soon and, halfway down the stroke, the pencil tip snapped with a sharp click. Vernon blew the dust from the page. He crossed the room toward the supply shelf; six slow steps left the logbook alone in a rising draft. As he reached for a spare, pages behind him flipped like lazy cards, the circle disappearing under fluttering sheets. The spare pencils had been sharpened the night before, yet the nearest one lay beyond his immediate reach. He hurried back and laid the metal ruler over the lower edge, fixing A: the pages stayed still. The ruler was his only straight edge. Drawing without it produced a wavering line that betrayed the compass rose’s clean geometry. The cost to B stood clear under the lamp’s steady pool of light.

A brief interlude of calm air arrived. Briar’s voice drifted through the stairwell, muffled by fresh gusts; “North-west or south-west?” sounded almost identical. She entered the room, cheeks marked by wind, while Vernon lifted the ruler and tapped the margin. Briar placed her fingertips along the paper, freeing the ruler for measurement yet covering part of the circle. Vernon leaned and stretched across her arm, guiding the pencil along the ruler’s edge. The line landed true, but a soft smudge formed where her sleeve brushed the graphite. The reading stayed legible, the corners held by warm living weight instead of cold steel. When he set the pencil aside, a ribbon of iron chill lingered across his knuckles.
