Unplanned Cup Clatter-

English 原文
"Three more sheets," Harriet whispered. She pinched a curled scrap from the printer teeth, its edge rough and slightly damp from toner dust, and dropped it into a paper cup resting on the warm plastic lid. The jam sensor still glowed red, so the rollers stayed silent. One freed fragment was not enough; she needed all three scraps clear before the machine would turn again. She tapped the lid twice, trying to motivate her own pace. A faint warranty sticker had been tucked behind the hinge, yet it offered no help. A second cup waited near the water cooler, its rim smooth and cool to the touch, but reaching it meant crossing the narrow corridor now filled with soft static from the carpet. A low hum from the rooftop solar panel reached her ears; her fingers kept moving. She had already freed one fragment, and two more small curls of brittle paper would make a difference between stalled silence and steady print flow.
Harriet’s sleeve brushed the fern beside the window, and a tiny gnat jolted into the air. The insect zig-zagged toward the corridor light; its sudden dart made Xena, who was stacking envelopes, jerk her elbow. Several letters slid; the corner tapped the cup dispenser. The plastic tube shuddered, and three cups toppled out in slow, hollow clacks—a living chain set off by one trembling leaf. Harriet scooped a cup; its surface felt ridged where the mold line ran. She knelt, hooked out the second scrap, and the fallout of fine paper grit sprinkled across her knuckles. Still the sensor glowed. The last sliver clung under a roller, thin as thread; a quick tug freed it. The printer clicked, then dragged in fresh paper with a dry hiss. Before another surprise spread, Harriet pushed the displaced cups back into the tube, wedging them tight against the spring. She turned toward her restarting worksheets, while the lowest cup, unnoticed, slowly rotated on its curved edge against the carpet.
