English 原文
A dusky swallowtail butterfly had rested on the sun-warmed side of the iron gnomon when Wyatt, fingertips still dusted from earlier tracings, brushed loose powder from the slate. The stone pressed cool and grainy against his supporting palm, and faint ghost arcs glimmered like fine frost across its face. Behind the reference wall, lilac shrubs released a single petal that drifted over his hat brim and settled near the gnomon base, its silky skin contrasting with chalk packed in the engraved hour-lines. Nothing in the garden moved quickly; even the shadow’s edge seemed fixed beneath the butterfly’s dark body.
He lowered a fresh chalk stick and drew, the tip rasping with a dry hiss that rose where the slate felt smoother and dropped over pitted spots. By the time his line met the ruler mark, the shadow’s tip had already slid beyond the chalk width, so a narrow gap opened between darkness and record. He rubbed the line with the eraser cloth; grey dust lifted, bringing an acrid mineral whiff that caught in his throat. Trying again, he watched the butterfly lift, circle once, and perch on the rod again; the slim insect formed a neat upright stripe that made the iron post’s slight lean suddenly obvious. Fresh curves still drifted left, each one confirming the tiny eastward tilt.
A cloud crossed, wiping the shadow clean for two long breaths, and during that pause Wyatt compared arcs with the loose-hinged protractor, sliding its smooth wooden arms across the slate. When sunlight returned, the butterfly remained motionless, its wings matching the new arc almost exactly, and the misplacement showed clearly against the measuring scale. Wyatt kept the rod untouched, rotated the protractor two degrees, and pulled a third path in yellow chalk beside the white ghosts. The new arc hugged the shadow from base to tip until the chalk lifted. Wyatt slid the ruler under the smudged lilac petal, leaving both tool and mark touching the tilted iron.
