English 原文
"The shadow tip meets the notch."
Reese raises the chalk and leans over the slate, sun hat brim casting a narrow stripe across the gnomon. A dry rasp rides under his hand, higher over smoother grain and lower where gritty patches drag like dry sand. From the mature privet hedge, a sparrow fires quick chirps, and branches answer with a soft brush along the path. On a nearby bench, a parent turns a page, paper giving a flat flap before the quiet folds return. He sets a first arc and crosses to the observation bench; the notebook crackles while his pencil scratches the time and length. By the moment the pencil lifts, the slate holds pale ghost lines, and the tip sits a chalk-width away. He returns, aims the point, and draws a continuous sweep, when a thin cloud slides overhead and the edge blurs.
He steps to the tool basket; the protractor lies open, the hinge easing apart with a soft slip unless his fingers pinch. Rested near the gnomon, the arms creep outward again, a delicate splay he hears as a tiny tick against the slate. Two paths sit clear: keep holding the hinge tight, or use the short ruler and log lengths before measuring angles. He keeps the tool, but changes order; he rainchecks the sweeping line and marks quick dashes at each hour-line boundary. He waits one slow breath for the shadow tip to kiss a dash, then links nearby dashes into a wavy curve. A thin veil passes and the edge sharpens; the chalk gives a crisp scratch, steadier now against the slate’s cool grain. Three fresh passes sit beside the first; each arc leans left of the ideal under glass, a quiet mismatch across the stone. He numbers the row, pencil whispering; a clean chip springs from the snapped stick and rests by the top tick. From the hedge, a small feather drops and catches on the notebook spiral, its light barbs trembling in the mild shade.
