Ice Before the Brick Held-

English 原文
The bucket’s surface looked glassy, but the water beneath still sloshed. Wade knelt in the brick-moulding zone, gloves already damp and gritty. A row of handcrafted snow bricks waited beside him, their sides smooth like polished soap. He had hoped to seal the entrance gap before fresh flakes buried his tools, so he dipped the ladle, poured a ribbon of water onto the wall top, then reached for a brick. By the time the block touched down, the water had skinned into ice, and the brick skated sideways. His shoulders tightened; he tried again, this time pressing harder to nurture the joint, yet the slippery film refused to grip.
A broad-chested dog trotted over from the porch, nose low to the earthy crust. Its paws scattered loose powder and tipped Wade’s mould, exposing darker, wetter snow beneath the surface layer. Wade paused. The failed bricks had been packed from drier heaps nearby; moisture, not force, seemed missing. He scooped the fresher snow, packed it tight, and tipped out a heavier block. The difference was immediate: edges stayed crisp, and a dull thud sounded when he set it down. He had been placing water first, brick second; now he reversed the order. Brick settled, shovel handle slid under one edge, and with simple leverage he lifted just enough space to drizzle water along the seam. The liquid oozed, then stiffened, locking the block in place.
Lark, smoothing her own side of the wall, glanced over. “That row sits straight now,” she said, fog hanging around her scarf. Wade answered with a quick nod while cold air prickled the bridge of his nose. One by one, they raised the circle until the entrance gap stood reinforced. The dog circled inside, leaving paw-prints that dented the sublime, flat floor. Wade stepped back toward the porch for a drink, steam curling from the thermos cup. Snow kept drifting onto the wall top, whispering against the new ice before sliding into the hollow of the mould below.
