Rain drummed on the porch roof as Hugo paused at the doorway; Max already leaned over the recording table, tapping a pencil. A sparrow glided beneath the eave and landed on the tin gutter, its claws scraping a short, tinny whine. Outside, steady drops turned slate stones into mirrors, and every new drip inside the glass gauge produced a hollow plink. Between porch and gauge, rough sandstone slabs accepted footsteps with a dull thud, while slick slate hissed faintly under passing water. On a wicker chair, Hugo’s grandmother turned a page, the paper rustling louder than her quiet remark, “It is letting up a bit.” A brittle twig skittered along the gutter, rattling each time the sparrow shifted its weight.

When the rain paused, Hugo stepped onto the path; thin water still whispered over slate, yet the sandstone stayed almost silent. He meant to read the gauge and mark the centimetres before the next burst joined the sky’s low rumble. At the post, the sparrow hopped onto the glass rim, wings flicking raindrops that pattered inside and muddied the meniscus. Hugo crouched to observe the curved surface, yet a fat drip from the tree thumped his hood and shifted his balance. The number blurred; still he scribbled, but the graphite smeared, the soft humidity turning the once-brittle tip to paste. Circling the post for a clearer view, he noticed the cylinder leaning, a slow drip ringing louder on the downhill side.

If he had kept the first figure, the extra tilt would have disguised how the bird’s droplets raised the level. Instead, he cleared a new space in the logbook, letting the page act as interpreter for both rain and sparrow. He planned to observe how bird and water interact each minute until the next shower returned. Canopy drips kept plopping on slate stones, the irregular rhythm echoing behind his quiet counting. He slid the smeared sheet aside, turned the logbook sideways, and drew two columns, one for depth, one for visits. While he printed the first row, the sparrow shook again; a single feather drifted onto the blank space. Hugo pressed the soft feather flat inside the margin, letting it mark the start of his new record.

雨勢暫歇時，雨果踏上小徑；薄水仍在板岩上低語，砂岩卻幾乎無聲。他打算讀取雨量筒刻度，在下一波雨再度伴隨天空低鳴之前完成記錄。抵達木樁時，那隻麻雀跳上玻璃邊緣，振翅濺出的雨珠啪嗒落入水面，弄亂了彎曲的弧面。雨果蹲下觀察水面，但樹上落下的一大滴水砸到他的帽兜，令他身形晃了一下。數字模糊，他還是寫下，可濕氣把原本脆硬的筆尖弄軟，石墨糊成一團。他繞著木樁走想找更清楚的角度，發現量筒傾斜，水滴在下坡側敲得更響。

如果他保留最初的數字，筒身的傾斜就會掩藏麻雀雨滴抬高的水位。他改闢新的空白頁，讓紙面成為雨與鳥共同的「口譯員」。他計畫每分鐘觀察雨水與鳥兒如何互動，直到下一陣雨來臨。樹冠水滴仍在板岩上噗通落下，不規則的節奏在他安靜的計數後方迴盪。他把被塗髒的頁面移開，將紀錄簿橫放，畫出兩欄，一欄是水深，一欄是到訪次數。當他寫下第一行時，麻雀再度抖翅；一根細羽緩緩飄落，正好落在空白處。雨果把柔軟羽毛壓平進頁邊，讓它為全新的紀錄作起始標記。
