Sweet grass smell fills Wade's nose. Pebbles lie scattered near the pond. A red apple sits beside them. There is room on the warm bench. The bench surface is warm. Wade sorts the smooth pebbles. He picks one grey pebble. He places it on the bench edge. He picks one white pebble. He lines it next to grey. He picks one black pebble.

The black pebble slips between slats. The stone stops above the puddle. Wade pilots the twig like an oar. The pebble rolls back up. I think that is lucky, he says. Thin water lines run down the twig. A bright ball rolls from the hedge. Pebbles scatter as it bumps them. The other child waves and thanks. A squirrel lands on the bench rail.
