He stands beside the fence.
The air stays warm.
Light from the sun touches feathers.
Four loose feathers rest on stone.

He lifts a long white feather.
He lays it near the gate.
He picks a spotted feather next.
Dust puffs when a chicken pecks.
He sets that feather beside the first.
An insect lands on the row.
Its tiny wings flick dust grains.
Kieran pauses as feathers shift slightly.
A goat kid stomps the ground.
The tremor moves the neat line.
He slides the feathers back again.
A bright paper party ribbon flutters nearby.
Ants hike across its curved edge.
He adds the ribbon at the end.
"Nice rows," the grown-up says.
Kieran smiles and taps the ribbon.
