Cluck-cluck echoes.
Iris stands near a low rail.
Feathers lie scattered.
She picks a long white feather.
She lays it on the left.
She picks a speckled brown feather.
She sets it in the middle.
A hen rests in repose inside the nest box.
The straw nest looks cozy.
A breeze lifts a tiny gray feather.
It floats past the rail.
"Feather," the grown-up says.
A short pause follows.
Iris grips a short stick.
She slides the gray feather back.
The grown-up beside her hums like a singer.
Iris lines the gray feather on the right.
Soft laughter rises from the grown-up.
The three feathers sit neat and bright.
A goat kid bleats near the gate.
