Comma-Shaped Specks in the Paper Vat-

English 原文
Valda stepped through the arched door; warm air laced with damp cellulose curled around her boots. A wooden frame rested on the vat’s rim, wire mesh glittering where stray fibers clung like snow on nettle stems. Steam lifted in wavering threads, carrying a sweet rot scent that settled against the back of her tongue.
She slipped her hands beneath the frame, fingers steady from years of watercolor stretching, and lowered it into the cloudy suspension. Rarely had the vat smelled so pungent, a hint of crushed bark and iron mingling with oil from the beater’s gears. It was the dense cotton pulp that slowed the draining water, and the familiar shake—left, right, left—spread the fibers unevenly. She tilted the frame toward the high window; patches glowed translucent, others stayed opaque, the sheet breathing like a lung unsure of its own rhythm.
Droplets slid off the corner, revealing tiny brown commas embedded among the fibers. At first she tried to interpret them as specks of husk, yet the shape echoed something she had seen in garden troughs. Inigo called from the loft, “Water’s clear below.” The words broke her stare; her shoulders rolled back, and she lifted the frame closer to her nose. A faint resin odor rose from the specks—bee brood boxes once smelled like that. She recalled that unsealed cells hold larvae waiting for metamorphosis; the thought made her analyze the pulp differently: petals had been mixed into yesterday’s batch, petals visited by every wandering pollinator near the millpond. The surprise no longer sat in the specks themselves but in what the future page might cradle.
She laid the sheet onto felt, palm hovering while water bled into the cloth. Fibers knitted tighter each second, locking the commas in a quiet archive. She paused—press handle above, drying rods beyond—then eased one fingertip to the edge of the wet page, the pulp cool and trembling under that light touch.
