The Gentle Tilt of the Crucible at Foundry Noon-

English 原文
Heat rippled upward from the furnace mouth, bending the outline of Glen’s sleeve as he set the crucible hooks. Dana stood a pace back, tamping moulding sand into the drag; each dull tap sounded like a negotiation between oak mallet and compacted grains, the rhythm stuttering whenever the sand clung to the tool. She paused, pressed a palm to the cool brick farther from the glow, then tapped again, watching the surface settle into an even plane. A single sparrow flicked past the loading bay, its wings slicing the warm shimmer before vanishing toward the rafters.
Three hours earlier, before the furnace reached pour temperature, Dana had brushed the wooden pattern clean. Years of quiet stewardship had rounded its edges until they slid into the sand without snagging. She traced the runner where it would communicate openly with the wider sprue, checking that no crumbed sand blocked the passage. Lifting the cope briefly, she noticed fine scratches crossing one corner; she let the half hang in the air a moment longer than needed, as though the worn lines might disclose something unspoken, then set it down and dusted the cavity once more.
Now, with iron nearly orange-white, Glen raised his tongs. Dana locked the flask halves, twisted the clamps, and waited for the tilt. Liquid metal surged, thick and deliberate, yet the stream faltered halfway, bulging against one side of the gate. A hiss rose, sharper than usual. Dana began to suspect the gating had shifted when she rammed the final corner; her shoulders stalled mid-breath, and she slid a wooden wedge beneath the flask to correct the angle. The stream steadied, filling the mould with a low, steady pulse that drummed through the sand into her boots.
When the last thread of brightness drained from the crucible, Dana loosened the clamps and lifted the cope to disclose the cooling casting. The new piece sat complete, though a slight ridge traced the corner where those hair-fine scratches had warned of age. Glen set the empty crucible aside and exhaled through his teeth. "Good flow," he said, voice almost lost under the chimney’s draft. Dana answered only with a nod, eyes on the faint ridge already turning from red to black. Above them, the smoke gathered, slipped beyond the roofline, and folded into the larger drift that the afternoon breeze kept drawing across the sky.
