English 原文
The shadow of the gnomon lay halfway between two faint hour lines, a dark wedge that told Maddox a long stretch of morning had silently drained away. Just below the wedge, a thin scratch crossed the pale limestone, barely wider than a bee’s leg, stopping abruptly at a hairbreadth gulf where the stone had chipped. He brushed thyme sprigs aside, their pepper bite blooming in the air, and pressed a knuckle over the scratch; the surface kept its warmth, yet the groove stayed cool, as though it absorbed light as greedily as soil drinks dew. Lavender heads nodded beyond the dial, bees droning over them, yet this single mark borrowed his attention more than the entire garden. Rhea, settled on the bench, tapped the copper watering can, its drip counting moments he could not see.
He lifted the can, and a thread of water slipped from its spout into the scratch, vanished without puddle or sparkle. Another tilt, another offering; the stone swallowed each drop. Sunlight glanced from the bronze gnomon, its deflection throwing a brief glimmer into Maddox’s eyes. He blinked, steadied the spout, and poured again. Nothing changed. Rhea’s voice drifted across the thyme: “The groove is still thirsty.” Maddox set the can down, flexed fingers slick with condensation, then returned to the task, deciding on one more pour before giving the puzzle back to the bees. A small silhouette of rosemary fell across the dial, feathered edges trembling in the mild breeze, yet the groove remained blank. The absorption felt endless, like trying to fill a gulf with teaspoons, yet his shoulders settled, slow and square.
The next tilt brought a quick spillover. Water hesitated at the edge, then raced along the scratch, meeting the chipped gulf and leaping outward in a silvery ribbon. Sunlit droplets scattered onto the hour lines, and the once-cool groove flickered bright. Where plain stone had reigned, a network began to unravel: the scratch linked hidden channels that the dry surface had concealed, and the entire dial bloomed with mirrored paths, each line catching light and sending it outward like tiny canals of glass. Maddox froze, palm hovering; the garden’s drone softened, as though space waited with him. He slid one finger through the shallow runnel, feeling the ridge that guided the water toward the noon mark. The shadow, sharper now against the damp sheen, nudged closer to his fingertip. Maddox traced the bright edge of the shadow with one steady fingertip.
