English 原文
Briny seaweed and warm lamp oil mixed in the air beneath the lighthouse door. Clara followed York up the spiral steps, her fingers sliding along the cool iron rail. In one hand she held a small carved porcupine; in the other, a tin of brass polish. The child pictured the toy standing beside the great lens, a guardian for the evening light. At the final landing she set the tin down and pushed a low wooden stool across the boards. The stool scraped, then paused when a metal edge caught one leg. Clara nudged again, harder. Friction broke, and the stool shot forward, bumping her knee and jolting the tin. The round tin rolled in a slow curve and gathered speed. It tapped the tall clockwork weight that kept the lens turning.
Metal met metal with a clear ping, and the pendulum lurched wider than usual. Gears groaned; the heavy lens began to rotate before its normal hour. York steadied Clara with one broad hand and laughed, the sound low against the glass. York said, "That stool slides faster than I expected." Clara raised the carved animal once more. Moving stripes of light raced across the shelf and over her face. Those shifting stripes painted quills on the walls, turning the moment into living imagination. She placed the toy on the spinning pedestal and withdrew. Momentum carried the porcupine in a gentle circle. Its tiny feet skimmed the tolerant brass rim, polished smooth by years of salt air. Beyond the windows the beam resolved a far fishing boat into a single white spark on calm water. A small pin slipped into place with a grateful click, unnoticed below the turning gear. Inside the clockwork, the brass weight rocks forward and back in quiet rhythm. Around it, the wooden porcupine glides onward, each sweep carrying it nearer to the shining edge.
