English 原文
Theo's hand landed flat on the warm limestone without a glance, the way it always did when he stepped beside the garden sundial.
Only after his palm felt the leftover cool patch where shade had recently lingered did his eyes follow the gnomon's stretched silhouette.
He traced the nearest hour line with two fingers, noting the faint grit caught in its groove.
A bee drifted past, its path a sinuous loop between rosemary spikes that trembled under the soft breeze.
Somewhere behind him gravel shifted where Flora walked, but his body stayed anchored to the stone.
The copper watering can on the bench dripped once, and the impact rattled a thyme sprig against the column.
Flora set a small basket near the southern bed where berries began to ripen, crimson skins catching light every time leaves parted.
She lifted the watering can, found it lighter than expected, and returned it to the bench at a slightly different angle.
A bright thread of water slipped from the tilted spout, dropped through sunlit air, and shattered into beads on the dial’s bronze rim.
Each bead rolled outward, gathered dust, and settled among thyme leaves where the drip’s rhythm slowly rebuilt itself.
Beyond the hedge a brick basilica rang a single bronze note, yet the garden’s creatures answered with nothing but their own layered motions.
Theo glanced sideways, trying to reconcile that distant chime with the silent creeping shadow now touching the place his fingers had warmed.
Drip, pause, drip—each splash landed closer to the hour line, while the shadow crawled toward the same groove from the opposite side.
Theo lifted his hand, thought of wiping the water away, then stalled mid-gesture when the next bead burst and sent a spray against his knuckles.
His breathing matched the interval between drops before he noticed, as though his ribs counted the seconds the sundial refused to reveal.
At that precise overlap the basilica rang again, the note hanging exactly as the new drip met the fresh edge of shadow.
Theo’s shoulders settled, and his halted hand stayed suspended, no longer aiming to correct anything, simply marking that single, shared arrival.
The drip faltered, the shadow slid past the hour mark, and bees resumed their wider loops, but Theo waited until three slow drops fell unaccompanied.
Only then did his palm return to the limestone, lowering through the scented heat with deliberate care, as though lowering a lantern into still water.
The stone greeted him with uniform warmth; the cooler patch had vanished, leaving a faint damp circle beneath his quieted thumb.
Flora, already gathering the basket, paused, yet spoke nothing; gravel hushed under her shoes as she stepped aside.
A final bead trembled on the spout, clung longer than any before, and released just as his fingertips lifted a breath off the stone.
Theo
Flora
