English 原文
Every afternoon, Orla tapped three young wheels and counted their dull answers; today, a pale flicker passed between her knuckle and the rind. A moth zigzagged under the warm bulb and hovered, its paper-thin wings quivering in the cool cellar air. Max stood near the middle shelf with the brush in his hand, the bristles pale with bloom. The stone room offered its gradient of scent, sharp near the door and mushroom-deep toward the far wall, while the bulb threw a steady ring on the boards like a small lighthouse moored in the vault. “Warm tonight,” Max said, voice low enough to blend with the brush’s soft rasp. Overhead, condensation gathered at a seam in the stone and let go a drop that kissed the floor without a splash.
Orla set her thumb to a rind and read a slight give, green-fresh compared to the stiffer older wheels above. She began to turn the round, her palms cupping its weight; her feet made a half-step stagger before finding balance on the damp stone. The moth veered and settled on the edge of a spruce board, then lifted again when she set the wheel down with a patient shuffle. A mild draft slid from the vent near the ceiling, and with it came a trace of balmy dusk, soft and sweet, as if the outside clung to the air itself. “Hear that thud?” Max asked after her next tap, the note denser than the one before. Orla nodded, but her hands paused over the brush, the pause stretching long enough for another cool droplet to land by her boot.
She lifted the brush, then stopped mid-arc and crouched instead, bringing her eyes level with the moth. Its wings closed like two leaves meeting, and it rested a breath on an old rind that resisted her thumb like packed earth. The wheel sat higher than her reach without the stool, its age sealed into a firmer skin; that small limit pinned her to the lower shelf. The moth moved again, not toward the bulb but toward the vent’s thin rectangle, where the air shifted and slowed. Orla returned to the younger wheel and cleared a crescent of bloom in slow circles, testing how the powdery skin gave way under firmer strokes. She glanced once at the stool and left it where it was, a tiny choice that kept the upper boards untouched awhile longer.
Orla set the brush on the stool and walked toward the stair, her knuckles still tingling from the last tap.
On the spruce board, a pale crescent showed where the bloom had been brushed back, the rind beneath more even and dry. The turned wheel sat with its grid now on top, a thin dusting of bloom settled along the rim like sifted flour. Near the ceiling, the bulb held its warm circle, and the vent’s gap breathed out a faint thread of balmy dusk.
