Moth Beside the Comb, Dust Across the Bench -

English 原文
Sara steadied the brass cylinder under the loupe and pressed a silver pin until the tool gave its crisp snap against yellowed metal.
Something small crossed the lamplight like a drifting mote, then hinged into wings and settled on the lamp’s cool rim.
The circle of light marked every scuff on the bench, the polish residue clinging in faint crescents around the vise jaws.
Her wrist found an awkward angle for the next pin, half a millimeter from the last, and she paused before nudging it home.
She turned the cylinder a notch, and a single tooth on the steel comb answered with a bright tick that faded almost instantly.
A pale dust lay in the comb’s base like silt in a shallow tray, a soft record of sanding and brass filings.
The moth lifted, made a slow circle through the warm air above the bench, and perched again beside her narrow field of work.
Oswin breathed near the shelves, the finished lids showing a dull sheen where many hands had traced their edges.
The front door swung wide; a gust ran through and disseminated the wood dust across the bench in a glittering spray.
“Afternoon,” Oswin said to the shape in the doorway, his voice carrying with the street air.
“Package for Oswin?” a voice asked, and the bell jangled again as the door eased and bumped back.
Dust startled her nose; two quick sneezes jerked her shoulders, and she stepped to the sink to rinse her hands and face.
When she returned, the lamplight showed a new scatter of powder over the pins, a faint veil that cooled the cylinder’s shine.
The test box on the side bench had let its mainspring unwind; its melody had slowed to stretched notes and stopped mid-phrase.
The moth now rested along the comb itself, its legs no heavier than thread, the nearest tooth standing still beneath it.
She brushed the residue away with the back of her knuckle and saw how clean metal, once cleared, reflected the pinheads in tiny suns.
She lifted the tool, set it down, and rotated the cylinder another notch so the row aligned cleanly under the loupe.
As the key took a gentle quarter turn between her fingers, the first pin reached its moment, and the comb’s quiet ping brushed the air.
The moth rose at that small vibration and settled again on the rim, no mote now but a living fleck that kept choosing the warm circle.
Her thumb rested on the winding key’s knurled edge, the shallow grooves catching her skin while the lamp drew a pale oval on the bench.
