English 原文
Kellan set his palm on the cherry block, expecting the cool of wood; warmth rose through the grain, and his hand eased back. He steadied two fingers on the raised petals and read the reversed bumps before ink touched them. A brayer picked up black from the glass slab; the tack sounded brisk, then dulled where a thin skin had formed. He pressed harder, certain two passes would coat the ridges evenly, and the roller replied with shorter, stickier notes. The smell held linseed and pigment, old and fresh sharing the same breath above the bench. From the stack, a damp sheet gave under his grip, its edges cool and pliant beneath his plan.
He laid the paper over the inked block, and the world under it went blank except for the damp weight. The baren met the sheet and began its circles; the heel of his hand leaned as the wood answered with a dry whisper. Those circles, constant and slow, inscribed a kind of devotion into his wrist without promise about the image below. When he peeled a corner, darkness gathered where he had pressed, yet a pale seam broke a line he thought solid. Elise watched the sheet lift and settle again, and she said, “The center darkened quickly just now.” He paused, the baren hovering, while the paper breathed back a faint grain against his fingertips.
He had carved a patch of sunflowers, one broad-faced head like a matriarch among smaller companions planted along the margins. Seeds sat in a tight whorl at the center, and gregarious dots crowded the leaves where afternoon would later settle. He rotated the brayer on the slab to wake a fresher tack, then rolled the block again until the sound sharpened. A second sheet went down, and lighter pressure drifted toward the edges while his circles widened and slowed. Peeling this time brought a twist he had not planned: a ring from the wood grain settled inside the largest flower, darker than the rest. Elise let out a small breath and said, “Huh,” her head still tilted at the angle from before.
He set the two prints side by side, one heavy and certain, one interrupted by that quiet circle the wood had kept. His thumb hovered over the baren before landing again, and the next circles loosened, their rhythm listening more than insisting. He pulled another sheet and then halted at the peel, suspended between letting the grain speak or asking the ink to blanket it. Elise said, “Both versions read for me,” and she moved a drying clip so the breeze could pass. He reached for the stack, then settled his palm flat on the bench instead, feeling its cool come through the lamp-warmed patch. Above the bench, paper kept curling as moisture left in slow increments, and along the far wall, daylight continued its slide.
