A football rolled from behind a dune.

"Who left it here?" Nell pointed with a sandy finger.

Cool air came from the open water.

They stood at the seaside with bare feet.

Erik looked around the wide beach.

"No one is near," he said.

Erik kicked it along the firm sand.

It hit a blue pail beside a sandcastle.

The pail tipped and spilled water on the sand.

Sticky sand clung to the ball and slowed it.

A small wave sent cold spray across their legs.

Erik jumped back and rubbed his knees.

Nell freed the ball with a light toe tap.

They began to count each bounce on the ground.

The ball gave four small bounces.

A soft hiss came suddenly from the valve.

Nell held it close and listened to the hiss.

"I can carry it," Erik said and held out his arms.

Nell passed the softer ball into his hands.

They walked toward the stairs above the beach.

Erik found a mesh bag beside a stack of nets.

Nell pressed the ball into the mesh bag.
