A square towel lifted at one edge beside a blue bucket. A small hermit crab crawled from a wet track to shade.

Sunlight warmed the bucket and made the damp sand shine. June knelt near the bucket and watched the crab move. "Hello there, little one," June said in a soft voice.

A tangle of kelp lay over the bucket handle. A thin rubber band also wrapped the handle for grip. The crab's shell slid under a kelp loop and pressed it.

The loop stretched tight as the crab kept crawling ahead. It slipped off the band and snapped with a sharp pop. The snap flicked a small twig toward the net handle. The handle bent a little, then sprang fast toward the pail. Its tip struck metal and made the whole pail clang.

June set one hand on the net and held it still. "That was loud," June said, with her eyes wide. June began a slow count and said, "One, two, three".

The crab moved under the towel again and kept walking. The kelp loop swings back and forth over the bucket's rim.
