"What jammed this drawer right now?" Stellan pulled the silver handle with care.
The school newsroom held long tables and a metal cabinet.
Cool air moved through the open window.
They worked on a story about the spring fair.
Paper for printing sat inside the bottom drawer.
Ives stood on a tall stool, a steady perch.
"It will not move," Ives said.
They pulled together, but the drawer stuck hard.
Stellan knelt and looked along the frame and edge.
A dark stain crossed the lip near the handle.
He touched it; the metal felt cold and sticky.
Sunlight warmed one corner of the front.
He rubbed the stain with his palm in slow circles.
Heat built; the sticky line turned soft and shiny.
He lifted again, and the drawer slid forward.
The cabinet bumped the table; a metal ruler slipped.
It hit the floor with a sharp clang.
Pens rolled, and paper inside showed clean, bright stacks.
Stellan set the stack on the center table.
