Hermit Crab and Shade Along the Tide Pool Runnel -

English 原文
A wave struck the outer shelf with a crisp slap, and a fine mist cooled Blair's wrists as it crossed the rock.
At her knees, a hermit crab levered a speckled shell along a ledge, each step landing as a soft, irregular click on stone.
Light entered the tide pool at an angle, so the floor seemed nearer than it was, then slid away as a cloud thinned.
Josie crouched beside her, shoes set on the dry shelf, eyes narrowing against the bright ripples.
The iodine-and-seaweed smell rose when a stray ripple met the rim and loosened white crystals, then faded as the surface stilled.
A ring of salt marked yesterday's edge, a thin collage of flakes that lifted from the stone like tiny sails.
Tiny fish flicked into a shadow under the wall, where pocked rock made a gallery of round, close rooms.
Between two dimples a hairline runnel had dried darker, a conduit that once ferried sea water from one bowl to the next.
Now it held only air and a sliver of shade, no wider than a blade of beach grass.
A gull called from the headland, the note carried flat across wet stone, then it thinned and went quiet.
The crab paused by a chipped fragment, then pivoted, the shell bumping the ledge and whispering grit through the still basin.
Blair lowered her head until her breath blurred her reflection, yet the glare pressed bright bands over the legs.
She raised her palm to cast shade, and slow strips of shadow slid across the bottom without stirring any settled dust.
Josie leaned to match the angle, and her voice stayed low: 'Do you see the legs now?'
Blair tapped the rock once with a knuckle and then held still; the crab paused, and anemone tentacles kept waving.
What had looked like wandering gathered into a pattern, as the shell drifted again along the darker runnel on the floor.
Where the groove crossed the ledge, denser brine lay like a thin pane; the shell slid a breath, then resumed its nudge.
Blair started to straighten, knees unlocking, and then bent again, her soles flattening against the warm rock while the ripples quieted.
She let her hand hover above the lip and waited, as the creature crept from shade into the fresher light nearby.
Far past the rocks, a rainbow sheen wrinkled on a roadside puddle, and a petrol tang arrived on the brief breeze.
Another speckled oval lay ahead, half-buried in sand, which had looked like a pebble until a feeler threaded out and withdrew.
Blair angled her palm again, placing the moving strip of shadow so it crossed the runnel and cooled the glare where legs worked.
The hermit crab kept to the groove's edge, testing the slope with that borrowed house, then easing past the waiting shell without touching.
Josie exhaled through her teeth and smiled without speaking, her chin hovering just above the rock so the surface stayed undisturbed.
Blair raised her palm once more, lower and slower than before, and let a narrower shade fall over the crab's careful path.
