A gust slapped the paper packet and flipped its corner. It bumped the plastic cup, and the cup rattled once. Then the air went still, and dust hung near the plank. Another burst pushed the leaves, and they clacked together. The leaves stopped, and the yard turned quiet again. Cool air touched the skin on Margot's wrists.

Margot took her phone and recorded the shifting yard. She watched the video playback and tapped the screen. The calm gaps between bursts stayed about three beats. She shaped a paper funnel and fixed it with an elastic band. She pressed the plank tight to guide the shallow opening.
